Program Overview
Advances in our understanding of the pathogenesis of human papillomavirus (HPV) and its clinical sequelae have enhanced our ability to prevent, screen, and manage cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases. Two HPV vaccines have been developed; both have proven safe and effective for girls and young women in the prevention of precancerous and cancerous lesions of the uterine cervix. One is also effective for the prevention of the majority of genital warts in males and females. Recent clinical data suggest that patients other than 9- to 26-year-old females, including men and women older than 26 years of age, may also benefit from HPV vaccination. In addition, the emergence of HPV genotyping has allowed health care providers to more accurately identify patients infected with high-risk HPV and tailor management strategies accordingly. This program will discuss current approaches to the prevention and management of HPV-related diseases.
